Decisions Decisions

by John Kettley

Decisions Decisions...

if there's one thing I've learned over the years it's that success is achieved from being 'business agile' which in of its self is based on our ability to make decisions quickly and if that decision is wrong to quickly make another decision without beating ourselves up over having made the wrong decision earlier.

The procrastinators often don't think of themselves as being slow decision makers, they typically just 'think' they need time too carefully think things through which translates to weighing up the risk of that decision!!

The thing is, that while they are thinking about 'maybe' committing to a course of action, others are cracking on with 'making things happen' which is why being a decision maker or or a procrastinator directly dictates the speed at which we achieve the outcome we want.

I typically see this when a business owner contacts me to ask if I can help them to either turn their company around or help them to grow it at scale to a potential exit event.

Experience tells me that the longer a person takes to meet face to face, (because they are busy) or to mull over what we both agreed where the challenges that they have and the actions to overcome them, the less inclined I am to engage as I now know that these type of people will be a nightmare to achieve 'their' goals as quickly as they could be achieved.

This is always a bit of a tricky balance to run as some people while not quick decision makers can be encouraged and guided but more often than not the leopard never changes its spots.

So can a slow decision maker ever turn into a decision making entrepreneur?

In short yes BUT... more often than not no

you see it's much like going on a diet or giving up smoking, slow decision making is a very hard habit to break and require us to consciously change that habit and for a new more productive habit of being less risk averse and more of a true entrepreneur...

If you quietly know that you are a slow decision maker and that this is probably why you have not achieved your true potential in business until now I encourage you to use January as your reason to add this to your list of new years resolutions i.e. to become a decision making entrepreneur
